Asian Eye Institute (AEI) is a world-class eye institute that puts the Philippines on the map of quality health care. Established in 2001, AEI is at the forefront of efforts to make breakthrough technologies for eye care treatment available to all patients. It serves 75,000 local and foreign patients annually.

Financial Performance

  • AEI achieved a revenue of PHP680.2 million in 2023, a 6 percent growth from PHP640.4 million from the previous year. The increase can be attributed to the normalization of demand for elective surgical procedures and products post-pandemic, after serving pandemic backlogs.
  • It also reported a decline in net loss by PHP129 million or 97 percent driven by the absence of the one-off credit losses for some of its outstanding receivables from Philhealth which were recognized in 2022, complemented by the stronger revenues and better margins from its core patient services, particularly the high-value surgeries and procedures, and also the sale of optical products.

2023 Key Highlights

  • In 2023, AEI saw a 13 percent rise in customers served compared to the previous year. It maintained a high cataract surgery safety rate of 98.7 percent and received a remarkable customer satisfaction rating of 4.7 out of 5.0. Furthermore, AEI improved its PhilHealth and HMO collection rates while also establishing the Asian Eye Research and Training Center.
  • AEI, in partnership with the Ophthalmological Foundation of the Philippines (OFPHIL), provided eye care services and products for more than 3,900 beneficiaries for the LAB for All caravan that provides free healthcare services to communities nationwide. They also partnered with educational institutions such as First College, Lyceum of the Philippines University-St. Cabrini College of Optometry, Centro Escolar University School of Optometry, and PHINMA Southwestern University College of Optometry to support the training of eye care professionals such as optometrists and ophthalmic technicians.
  • As part of its corporate relations events, AEI integrated artificial intelligence (AI) technology to detect signs of eye disease and also offered special optical promos for corporate and non-government organization clients.

Looking Forward

  • In 2024, AEI will launch an ambulatory surgical center at its Trinoma clinic in Quezon City and  will improve its facilities at the Rockwell Phinma clinic to ensure consistent exemplary patient service. Furthermore, it will strengthen and expand partnerships with financial technology companies.
  • Asian Eye’s Shop and Telehealth will make eye care and products accessible to more Filipinos, especially for those in underserved areas, while lessening carbon footprint. AEI will also establish a Myopia Center to provide comprehensive treatments for myopia management and control.
  • To support business growth, it will focus on building a high-performance organization and sales culture, increasing the mix of non-core and non-Rockwell revenue, and expanding partnerships and alliances. AEI will provide business systems improvements, including the implementation of enterprise resource planning software and the latest version of Electronic Medical Records systems. To ensure optimal resource allocation, AEI will plan manpower complements, particularly on doctors. To more efficiently screen larger populations for early detection and treatment of vision-threatening eye conditions, it will expand the use of AI in its screening activities.
